FARO AIRPORT
Faro Airport is Portugal's second busiest airport, preceded only by Lisbon Airport, and it is the main hub of the Algarve region.
In 2017 more than 8 million passengers travelled through Faro Airport, thus ranking it as the sixth most important hub in the Iberian Peninsula.
The Airport is located about 7 km from the city centre, which lies on Portugal's south coast.
Faro Airport is the reference point for those willing to reach Algarve's popular destinations such as the cities of Albufeira, Lagos and other renowned areas such as Armação de Pêra and Quinta do Lago.
The airport infrastructure includes an airstrip that is about 8 meter above sea level.
HISTORY
Originally conceived and built in the 60’s as an airfield for airships, it was then officially opened to the public on 11th July 1965.
Faro Airport became immediately a strategic point for the promotion and the development of the entire region’s tourism.
An expansion and modernization program started in 2010 in order to increase both the air traffic capacity and the Airport's security.
CONNECTIONS FROM AND TO FARO AIRPORT:
Reaching the airport using public transport is very easy due to the relative short distance between the Airport and the city centre.
Bus Services from Faro Airport to city centre:
Bus lines #14 and #16 provide connections to and from Faro Airport.
Ticket price, if purchased on board, is 2.35 €.
Daily single tickets (purchasable on board) cost 5.30 € each and are valid 24h from time of purchase for an unlimited number of rides.
The bus stop is located outside the arrivals area.
The city centre, which is the last stop, is reached in about 20-30 minutes depending on traffic.

Several buses depart from Faro's city centre towards others areas within the Algarve region and towards Spain.

Train service from Faro airport to city centre:
There is no train station near to Faro Airport.
The nearest train station is in fact located in the city centre.
It is reachable through bus line # 16 (penultimate stop) departing from the airport. Trains towards all destinations in south Portugal depart from this station.
Taxis from Faro airport to city centre:
Being Faro Airport not far from the city centre, taking a taxi may in fact be the best option if you are travelling with a group of people.
Taxis can also be booked by phone in order to request a larger car.
Price for a single route is about 10 € and luggage is not included in the price.
Taxi fares are calculated according to the distance.
Once on board make sure the taximeter is working.
Tips are appreciated but not compulsory.
Special taxis are provided for passengers with reduced mobility.
These taxis can be booked online on Auto Faro, Tàxis Pinheiro, Delmira, Lda's websites.

Albufeira is also reachable by express or inter-city bus services.
Travel time is about one hour and a half.
Trains to Albufeira depart from Faro's city centre and the travel time is approx 40 minutes.
The last available option is to take a taxi from Faro Airport which will reach the city centre in about 35 minutes.
Albufeira, which is today one of Algarve's most touristic destinations, was back in time an Arab fortress and a fishermen village.
It is located just above an amazing cliff surrounded by magnificent beaches, offering all kinds of activities.

Travel time is about one hour and a half.
As Lagos is about 90km far from Faro Airport, taxis are not a convenient option.
Lagos is a city located on Algarve's western coast.
Due to its wonderful beaches and night clubs, Lagos is the preferred location for surfers' and young people.
Houses covered by azulejos and ancient Moorish walls are the main peculiarities of its historical city centre.

Armação de Pêra, which was once a fishermen area, is nowadays known for its 6 km long beach.

Quinta do Lago is one of Algarve's seaside locations.
It is located only 4 km far from Faro Airport.
It is a very expensive area and there are just a few hotels.
Quinta do Lago's beach, characterized by its white sand, is found near to a 3 km long natural park, known as Ria Formosa
SECURITY CONTROLS:
Once you have completed the check-in, you will need to go through the usual security controls.
Make sure to arrive with sufficient advance as you may find long queues.
Before going through security controls prepare your personal ID/passport and boarding card and place your personal belongings in the specific baskets.
Liquids must be placed in specific transparent plastic bags.
Medicines with medical receipts and specific dietetic products (e.g. new-born food) are considered as exceptions.
Liquids purchased, once through the security controls, at the airport's duty free are allowed.

In order to avoid long queues at the passport control you may want to use the Fast Track service that can be purchased online for an extra cost of €4.
