Slow cooker lamb curry. This is an easy to make and delicious lightly spiced curry. Made with store cupboard spices and minimum ingredients it will soon become a family favourite!

Slow cooker lamb curry. Beautiful tender chunks of lamb in a rich sauce of tomatoes, garlic, onions and spices. Need I say more?

I would say this is quite similar to my lamb rogan josh recipe but that one is cooked on the hob.

So folks, today I'm delighted to bring you another awesome curry to add to my list of slow cooker curry recipes.

This one is really special though. It's just a beautiful Indian lamb curry recipe.

Maybe it's just because lamb is my favourite meat or perhaps it's just the perfect winter curry?

Either way I know you won't be disappointed.

It's not too difficult to make and whilst bubbling away in your slow cooker it will make your whole house smell AMAZING!

I've used diced lamb to make this curry.

That keeps it easy and so that it's ready to serve immediately after the cooking time.

You could plonk in a leg of lamb or a shoulder of lamb, if you can get that into your slow cooker. (Mine isn't big enough).

It should cook in roughly the same amount of time as diced lamb.

At the end of the cooking time you would need to then pull the meat off the bone before serving.

  • Olive Oil
  • Diced Lamb
  • Onion
  • Ginger And Garlic Paste
  • Green Chilli Paste
  • Turmeric
  • Garam Masala
  • Cinnamon
  • Ground Cumin
  • Tinned Chopped Tomatoes
  • Lamb Stock
  • Chopped Fresh Coriander (Cilantro)

Substitutions

  • Olive Oil - vegetable oil can be substituted.
  • Diced Lamb - use good quality lamb meat. I use pieces of lamb already diced from my supermarket. You can use other cuts though. Check out my FAQ's below.
  • Onion
  • Ginger And Garlic Paste - you could substitute with fresh ginger and garlic ground up together.
  • Green Chilli Paste - you could substitute with some finely chopped green chillies mixed with a little oil to make this curry paste.
  • Turmeric
  • Garam Masala
  • Cinnamon
  • Ground Cumin
  • Tinned Chopped Tomatoes - you can omit this and use tomato puree or tomato paste instead but you will need to increase the amount of stock to have enough liquid.
  • Lamb Stock - you could use chicken stock instead.
  • Chopped Fresh Coriander (Cilantro)

Hints and Tips For How To Make This Slow Cooker Lamb Curry

  • To save time just buy already diced lamb from your supermarket but trim any excess fat off. A small amount of fat is fine as it will melt into the sauce and add some extra flavour!
  • For even more flavour make this lamb curry the day before then allow it to cool and pop it covered into your fridge to marinate. Reheat it in a microwave or on the stove in a saucepan until thoroughly hot.
  • Store this curry for a maximum of 2 days covered in your fridge.
  • You can freeze this lamb curry. It's best portioned into individual containers then frozen. Defrost it thoroughtly. Reheat it in a microwave or on the stove in a saucepan until thoroughly hot.

Step By Step Instructions

Detailed instructions are the recipe card below. But here is a quick step by step guide of how to make slow cooker lamb curry:

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil over a medium heat in a large frying pan. Brown all of the lamb. Transfer to the bowl of the slow cooker.
  2. Using remaining oil, sauté the onion then stir in the ginger and garlic paste, green chilli paste, turmeric, garam masala, cinnamon and ground cumin. Stir well for a couple of minutes then transfer to your slow cooker.
  3. Add the chopped tomatoes and stock. Give it a good stir. Cook on a low heat for about 6 hrs or until you have tender meat.
  4. Serve the curry garnished with chopped fresh coriander and some basmati rice or naan breads.

FAQ's

What Is The Best Cut Of Meat For Lamb Curry?

I use already diced stewing lamb from my butcher or supermarket. You could use a leg of lamb or a shoulder of lamb.It should cook in roughly the same amount of time as diced lamb.

What To Serve With This Easy Slow Cooker Lamb Curry?

Serve your slow cooker lamb curry with some basmati rice or jeera rice. Or why not make your own home made naan bread?

Is This Recipe Spicy?

This is a medium spiced dish. You can remove the green chilli paste if you want it very mild. Or use your own curry powder instead of all the spices I use.

My lamb curry is too watery. What can I do?

Stir a little corn flour or plain flour into the lamb gravy until thickenned to your liking.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • 600 g diced lamb
  • 1 onion diced
  • 2 tablespoon ginger and garlic paste
  • 1 tablespoon green chilli paste
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 tablespoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 400 g tin chopped tomatoes
  • 100 ml lamb stock
  • Chopped fresh coriander to garnish

Instructions

  • Gently heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a large pan. Add handfuls of the lamb at a time and brown the meat for about 6-8 mins then transfer to your slow cooker.

  • Add the remaining oil to the pan and sauté the onion for about 5 mins until softened then stir in the ginger and garlic paste, green chilli paste, turmeric, garam masala, cinnamon and ground cumin. Stir well together a further minute then transfer to your slow cooker.

  • Add the tin of chopped tomatoes and lamb stock to the slow cooker and stir well. Cook on a low heat for about 6 hrs.

  • Serve the curry garnished with chopped fresh coriander and some basmati rice or naan breads.
