Electrocardiogram (ECG)
An ECG is a recording of the electrical activity of the heart. It is taken by placing small sticky probes on the chest, arms and legs of your child. It is not painful, but your child needs to keep still for a few minutes.
Echocardiograph (Echo)
An echocardiography machine uses sound waves to create a moving picture of your child’s heart. A trained and accredited sonographer will perform the echo. An instrument (Echo probe) that transmits and receives sound waves will be placed in various positions on your child’s chest. It may take up to one hour to complete the test. It is performed in a semi-dark quiet room. It does not cause any pain, and your child is required to lie still.
Holter monitor
A Holter Monitor is a small wearable device that keeps a recording of your child’s heart rhythm. It records the electrical activity with three small sticky probes on the chest. Your child wears the device for one or two days, and the device records all the heartbeats during that time. Your child can continue their normal daily activities when wearing the monitor apart from bathing or showering.

About Interventional Cardiology
Interventional cardiology is a branch of cardiology dealing with catheter-based treatments for structural heart diseases. Interventional cardiology uses catheters for the diagnosis and treatment of heart diseases.
The catheter is a long, tubular, flexible instrument inserted through blood vessels in the radial artery in the arm, the femoral artery in the groin or neck, and threaded to the heart. By inserting a catheter, it helps to assess the patient’s heart condition. It can be used to repair a damaged heart valve or clear a clogged artery.
Some interventional cardiology procedures include coronary angioplasty (Stent), balloon valvuloplasty and cardiac ablation.
On this website, you will find information on common conditions, procedures and treatment options in cardiology. We offer information to help prevent or lower your risk of heart disease, angina and improve your heart health.

Justin Mariani - Cardiologist Melbourne
03 9288 2210
Associate Professor Justin Mariani
Consultant Cardiologist
MBBS BMedSci PhD FRACP FCSANZ
Specialist in Interventional Heart Failure
Cardiac Rhythm Device Management
Head, Pacing Service at Alfred Hospital
Adjunct Associate Professor, Central Clinical School, Monash University
VMO Cardiologist at Alfred Hospital and St Vincent’s Private Hospital
A/Prof Justin Mariani was trained as a specialist cardiologist in Melbourne at The Alfred Hospital,. He then completed a PhD at Monash University and the Baker Institute. This was followed with an Interventional Heart Failure Fellowship in Toronto, Canada, at the University of Toronto. He achieved specialist status as a cardiologist in 2006.
His expertise is in all fields of cardiology, but he has special interest and training in heart failure and cardiomyopathies, surgical implantation and follow-up of devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators (and recognised nationally as a leader in cardiac resynchronisation therapy), and clinical and research interest in haemodynamics (pressure) and cardiac catheterisation.
What is Interventional Heart Failure?
Interventional heart failure is a subspecialty of cardiology. It is a field where cardiologists have had extra training and developed expertise in advanced heart failure and also have interventional (i.e. procedural) skills that can manage heart failure problems. This includes special pacemaker and electrical techniques, cardiac catheterisation techniques, and many other procedures.
Not all patients with heart failure need a procedure, and not all patients needing a pacemaker or angiogram have heart failure. The majority of pacemakers that A/Prof Mariani implants and manages are in patients with electrical issues and not heart failure. However, he is able to manage both, which is convenient to patients, especially for complex technologies, such as cardiac resynchronisation therapy and defibrillators.
About Our Practice
A/Prof Mariani, with his team, aims to provide timely and expert care and medical advice for cardiological problems. For an appointment, or for any queries, please contact his main rooms at (03) 99988300.
For outpatient consultations, A/Prof Mariani sees patients in consulting rooms. In this setting, simple and complex cardiovascular and internal medical issues are evaluated, and management plans are formed. This setting also allows time for planning for procedures such as coronary angiograms and pacemaker implantation. Some patients with complicated issues are followed long term to ensure optimal care. For other patients, the initial consultation may be all that is required to provide a framework for management for the patient and their referring doctor.
Services
Being a consultant cardiologist means A/Prof Mariani sees and manages patients presenting with conditions of the heart and blood vessels. These can be established conditions (where we know the problem and are treating it and any further issues) or diagnostic problems which require further evaluation along with management.
Often cardiac conditions may present urgently - in this setting, A/Prof Mariani works in hospitals, including coronary care units, to manage these conditions along with other hospital staff. Sometimes these problems require invasive procedures, many of which A/Prof Mariani actively performs. Where he does not perform these procedures, for example, open heart surgery or AF ablations, A/Prof Mariani works with other specialists such as cardiac surgeons and electrophysiologists to ensure the best outcome for patients and their families.
